Join _underscore in welcoming a dear friend of the space, Vaughan Larsen, in an esoteric celebration of queer community with their 2nd installment of a new performance piece, Ritual of a Girl. Larsen recently debuted this piece in the exposition “An Evening of Performance” at an intimate Echo Park gallery organized by C. Bain.
Larsen is briefly returning to Milwaukee, WI to celebrate the opening of their Mary L. Nohl exhibition at the Haggerty Art Museum. Larsen’s work is an amalgamation of processes and concepts which orbit around gender expressions, the gravity of performative identity, and simultaneously exalts unique joys of queerness. The planets of Larsen’s practice involve photography, community organization, and most recently, performance.
Larsen recently relocated from Milwaukee to Los Angeles last year after taking to the road, roaming the country with a wish to make very tangible connections with queer land and people along the way. Larsen reflects on their queerness since making their move in a recent email:
I'm currently reading "Stone Butch Blues" by Leslie Feinberg, an autobiographical novel. It's completely changing how I view myself within society as a queer person, and giving me much more respect for our elders who've lived through turmoils more horrible than we can imagine, while at the same time I'm learning to acknowledge cultures that view trans people as individuals with a closer connection to the Gods and Universe. I've caught a bug and can't stop soaking up new liberating information!
they continue to reflect on their new urban environment:
It feels like my roots are starting to grow into the desert ground and it's beginning to feel like home.
